Do something today that your future self will thank you for!

It was an unseasonally warm beautiful Fall day without a cloud in the bright blue sky when my phone rang and life as I knew it drastically changed. After years of saving and planning we were in our new dream home with our two girls, ages four and six. On this particular day the girls were in school, my husband was out mowing the lawn, and I was straightening the house.
“Where is John?” The voice on the phone desperately squeaked out. “Is he home?” After answering, yes, the person told me to get him and turn on the TV.
My husband is a pilot for a commercial Airline and that day we stood in our home, as we watched the planes fly into the twin towers in New York City. In horror and shock, we stood motionless practically holding our breath.
That day we were one of the lucky ones. We were both home, safe and sound, and ALIVE! But as the months went by and the country got back to life as usual, we were left with a huge impact that changed the way we had to live our lives.
Overnight, our income was cut in half and our retirement disintegrated when the airline went into bankruptcy. Our new reality was scary, uncertain and overwhelming.
We had not saved and prepared for this kind of financial catastrophe. Budget? Isn’t that when you spend what is in the bank account and then just wait until there is more? Or temporarily put it on credit to pay it off when the check comes in?
For each course purchased, we will donate one to an underprivileged parent
Looking into our daughters’ eyes and having to explain how life was going to have to change was difficult to do. We sold my husband’s dream car that he had always wanted and just purchased. We got rid of all non-essential services like gym memberships.
Telling you about this still brings tears to my eyes, makes my heart race and gives me a lump in my stomach. I felt angry that I was in this situation and helpless to get out of it.
The hardest part was trying to explain the financial situation to my kids in a way that they would understand without blaming myself and feeling like the worst parent for no longer being able to provide a life that they had become accustomed to living.
I didn’t want them to see the worry and fear I felt in being able to pay the mortgage let alone their dance and music lessons.
It was at this point that I decided that I was not only going to learn how to manage my money better, but I was going to teach my children to do the same so that when they grew up they wouldn’t be in this situation.
I realized that we live in a world where money management is not talked about or taught in schools.
As a result, we grow up to be adults feeling insecure about our lack of knowledge, overwhelmed by all the information, alone to figure it out on our own and stressed to find the time to learn it with our crazy busy lives.
This results in us being unprepared when catastrophe hits. Then when we have children, we are filled with additional worry for them, as well as guilt in not being able to provide everything we think they want and that others seem to have.
As my coaching continued one of my daughter’s friends saw the results and the life my daughters live and asked me to coach her. Although she was almost 30, the easy simple tools helped her go from overspending and in constant fear and worry to successfully establish an emergency fund and live without the stress of lack of funds.
More recently a good friend asked me to help her teach her son about money. The tools and plan I shared helped her so much she said I would do the world a disservice if I did not make it available to others.
You see, I had no idea there were others like me who were confused, overwhelmed, and feeling ill-equipped to teach their children about money. Everyone looks like they have their stuff together and all figured out.
However, more and more people have talked to me asking how I did it and wanting access to the tools and strategies I used.
So, we got together, sat down and created an easy, simple, step-by-step plan with all the tools I developed to get my kids where they are today.
And we are excited to share it with you so you can lessen your stress, worry, and guilt around money and empower you with confidence to successfully explain and teach your kids money management.
